My opinion about the importance of learning reference in understanding a text is that it's really important to understand what reference are you reading. And if you or anyone out there don't understand what they're reading, you or they must ask a person/people who you think is capable to tell you something that's not understandable to you. And don't forget to ask the right person, if you ask the wring person, it could be deviated and it could became awkward when you re-explain it to others.
